Drawbridges

Given the number of navigable waterways within Florida, it should be no surprise that you’ll cross over drawbridges on a regular basis. The important thing, though, is for you to know when not to cross:

  • If you see a drawbridge sign with a flashing yellow light, the bridge ahead is operating. Slow down and be prepared to stop.
  • At a drawbridge with a red/yellow/green signal, a yellow light means the bridge is about to start operation. Stop if you can safely do so.
  • A red light at the bridge means stop behind the stop line and remain in place. The bridge is operating. No vehicle or foot traffic is allowed.
  • A green signal means proceed, but use caution. Wait until you are sure the bridge has ceased operating.
  • It is against the law to attempt to outrun drawbridge gates that are opening, closing, or are down. This not to mention the danger you put yourself and your passengers in!
